Sources Of Pain Flashcards
The source of pain can be superficial or deep. It is poorly localized and may be referred to the body surface as cutaneous pain. Sources include bone, nerve, muscle, tendon, ligaments, periosteum and cancellous bone, arteries, and joints.
Somatic pain
Pain related to the skin. Pain is well localized in the patient can point directly to where it hurts
Cutaneous pain
Source of pain related to the internal organs in the heart muscle and includes all body organs located in trunk and abdomen. The pain is considered to be diffuse. This pain rarely occurs without associated signs and symptoms.
Visceral pain
Pain that occurs secondary to damage or pathophysiologic changes of the peripheral or central nervous system. Can occur as a result of injury or distraction of peripheral nerves, pathways in spinal cord, or neurons located in the brain. Examples are MS, stroke, amputation, nerve compression
Neuropathic pain
Pain felt in an area far from the site of the lesion but supplied by the same or adjacent neural segment. It is considered to be well localized, patient can point to where it hurts, but it does NOT have sharply defined borders. it can be spread from its point of origin and can be somatic or visceral
Referred pain
Pain that radiates down your leg from your hip and lower back
