Sound wave basics Flashcards
What are the two basic types of sound waves?
1) Longitudinal waves
2) Transverse waves
What is a transverse wave?
The particles in a transverse wave move up and down in a perpendicular motion
What is a Longitudinal wave?
The particles in a longitudinal wave move forward and backward
What is a compression zone?
Where the molecules are most compressed
what is a rarefaction zone?
It is between the compression zone
What is the wavelength?
The distance between two peaks or valleys
What is the amplitude?
The distance between the zero lines and peak or valley.
What is the frequency?
The number of full cycles per second.
X is equal to…
Time
Y is equal to…
Amplitude
What is a spectrogram?
- The spectrogram is generated from the waveforms
- Spectrograms provide more readily useful cues to speech sounds different.
What are the English stop sounds?
P, T, K, B, D, G.
