General cognition and its impact on communication Flashcards
What is our memory distinction #1?
- SHORT-TERM MEMORY
- -> Current working memory
- -> Limited capacity
- LONG-TERM MEMORY
- -> “Permanently” stored information
What is our memory distinction #2?
- Episodic memory
- -> For specific things facts, etc.
- Procedural memory
- -> Memory of how to do things
Why is short-term memory important in relation to word learning?
- Information is held in “articulatory loop” while new lexical information is stored.
- Larger words challenge STM in both perception and production.
How many syllable words do children usually produce?
1+2 syllable words
-Children avoid larger words to a degree.
Where do we begin to see phonological development problems in children?
School age
-Shows up in larger words
What do we know about STM and learning syntax?
That it is important to start small
-once STM improves it extends to long term memory
What do we know about STM in conversation?
-Need to be able to remember short term info long enough to process long sentences
What is the “less is more” hypothesis?
-Adults have good LTM and can store words and sentences but don’t do as well in generalization
-Children have poor LTM and can’t store as much info but extract general principles so they can create sentences when they want
Therefore we learn a new language better as a child than as an adult
