Q

Why is short-term memory important in relation to word learning?

A
  • Information is held in “articulatory loop” while new lexical information is stored.
  • Larger words challenge STM in both perception and production.

Q

What is the “less is more” hypothesis?

A

-Adults have good LTM and can store words and sentences but don’t do as well in generalization
-Children have poor LTM and can’t store as much info but extract general principles so they can create sentences when they want
Therefore we learn a new language better as a child than as an adult
