Sound Flashcards
How do we hear things?
Vibrations travel through the ear and send messages to the brain
What are the two types of sound waves?
Transverse waves and longitudinal waves
Sound travels fastest through what medium?
Solids and slowest through gases
If a glass has a small amount of water in it and the glass is tapped, will the sound be higher or lower is pitch?
Higher
Sound is seen through what waves?
Longitudinal waves
What is frequency?
It’s how many waves pass through one spot per second.
When you increase the pitch of a sound the frequency _____________ (increases or decreases)
Increases
When we increase the loudness of the sound the ____________ increases.
Amplitude
Sound travels at ____ meters per second through air and ______ meters per second through a solid.
A- 343. B-5000
Sound travels at about ______ meters per second through water
1500
How do u calculate the depth of water?
Halve the time it takes for the sonar signal to return. This gives the time it takes for the signal to reach the bottom or the fish.
Multiply this by the speed of sound in sea water ie (x1500)
What is the vibrating source for speech?
Flaps of skin, called vocal cords
What is the vibrating source for a drum?
Drum skin
What is the vibrating source for a piano
String inside a piano-when you strike a key, the string is struck by a hammer
What is the vibrating source for a bell ringing
Metal casing of the bell
