Somatosensation Flashcards
What is agnosia not due to
A result of loss of hearing or vision
Agnosia
Sensory disorder- an inability to recognize what is perceived
Agnosia
Actual sensory receptors, sense organs, and pathways conveying info to the thalamus and cortex and primary sensory cortex itself are intact
Agnosia usually acquired if
Site of lesion is in secondary assoc areas of cortex- post/sup parietal lobe
Pure agnosia rare
Many types if agnosia a in all different sensory modalities
Capgras syndrome
Perceive family members replaced by impostors
Visual neglect
Attentional problem, failure to process an entire hemi-space
You can see, hear, feel, but brain does not recognize because over the midline does not exist
Finger agnosia
Inability to recognize own fingers or others
Graphestgesia
Inability to recognize writing on ones skin
Phantom limb
The sensation that a missing limb is still present, may feel pain or movement
Aphasia
Acquired disorder of language comprehension, language formulation, language production
Auditory agnosia
Inability to comprehend speech or non-speech sounds
Even when show object no perception
Vocalize but not process that not make sense
Auditory processing disorder
Disorder perceiving heard language (broadly speaking)
Language processing disorder
Disorder attaching meaning to language - broadly speaking
Prosopagnosia
Inability to recognize once familiar faces
Visual processing disorder
Disorder interpreting seen information/stimuli
Visual agnosia
Inability to recognize objects, pictures, colors
Somatosensory system handles the experience of bodily sensations
Touch, feel, texture, pressure, proprioception, movement, temp
Somatosensory system is fairly complex
3 neuron set up
Sensory info moves upwards
Becoming more refined or enhanced or integrated at each level of processing
Sensory info is used for more than just perceiving input
Sensory feedback is also used by the motor programming system to help refine and edit intended movements
Sensation is not perception
Sensation is the awareness of a stimulus either external or internal
Perception is the meaningful interpretation of those Stimuli
Common terms for somatosensation
Pain
Temp
Touch
Proprioception
Mechanoreceptive
Touch
Pressure
Tactile vibration
Kinesthesia (movement/post of limbs)
Thermoreceptive
Cold and heat
