SOM solid machenics Flashcards
Solid mechanics
Solid mechanics, also known as mechanics of solids, is the branch of continuum mechanics that studies the behavior of solid materials, especially their motion and deformation under the action of forces, temperature changes, phase changes, and other external or internal agents
What is the importance of strain energy
principle?
Strain energy principle are widely used when
determining the response of machines or
structures for both static and dynamic loads.
What is modulus of resilience?
Proof resilience is also known as modulus of
resilience. When the stress is equal to proof
stress at the elastic limit, the corresponding
resilience is known as modulus of resilience.
What is meant by resilience?
It represents the ability of the material to absorb
energy within elastic Mmit. It is strain energy per
unit volume of the material.
What are principal stresses?
ESE 2019
Principal stresses are the stresses acting on
principal planes. Further a plane in a strained
body is called as principal plane if there is no
shear stress acting on that plane
Why octahedral shear stress theory is
preferred by engineers?
(ESE 2008
Because it is based on stress conception and
does not consider the stress-strain relationship
Explain moment area method.
ESE 2016
This method is specially suitable when deflection
or angle of rotation at only one point of the beam
is desired.
Mohr’s First theorem: The angle eAB between
the tangents to the deflection curve at two points_
A and B is equal to the negative of the area of
M/EI diagram between the points.
Mohr’s Second theorem: The deviation of B
from tangent at A is equal to the negative of the
statical moment w.r.t B of the M/EI diagram area
between A and B.
