Solutions Flashcards
Endothermic
Takes in heat from the surrounding environment
Exothermic
Gives out heat to the surrounding environment
Substance
Any material (in any state) that has a definite chemical reaction
Soluble
A material able to disolve in a solvent
Insoluble
A material unable to dissolve in a solvent
Solute
The minor component in a solution, which dissolves in a solvent (e.g. salt)
Solvent
A substance able to dissolve other substances (e.g. water)
Solution
A liquid mixture in which the solute is distributed within the solvent
Filtration
The process of removing insoluble solids from a liquid using filter paper (e.g. sand and water)
Distillation
A process involving the conversion of a liquid into vapour that is then subsequently condensed back to liquid form, without its insoluble substance (e.g. ink and water)
Chromatography
A technique for seperating the components, or solutes of a mixture (e.g. differently coloured liquids)
Simple distillation
The method used to separate substances in mixtures with significantly different boiling points
Fraction distillation
A techinque used for seperating mixtures containing chemicals with boiling points close to each other.
