Magnetism Flashcards
Electromagnet
An electromagnet is a type of magnet in which the magnetic field is produced by an electric current.
Magnet
A material that has a magnetic field
A magnetic field
The region around a magnet where the magnetic force is experienced
Magnetic materials
Iron, cobalt, nickel
How to strengthen an electromagnet
Increasing current, increasing the number of turns of the coil, adding an iron core
Solenoid
A coil of wire with many turns
Iron core
A piece of iron placed inside a solenoid
Poles
The ends of a magnet (North or South).
Attraction
When forces pull objects towards each other.
Repulsion
When forces push objects away from each other.
Force
A push or a pull that acts on an object due to the interaction with another object. Force is measured in newtons (N). Forces are divided into contact forces and non-contact forces.
Contanct forces
Contact forces act between two objects that are physically touching, e.g. tension, friction, air restsiatnce, upthrust, thrust, normal reaction force
Non-contact forces
Non-contact forces act between two objects that are not physically touching, e.g. magnetic force, electrostatic force, gravitational force,
