Solids, liquids, gases, particle theory and change in state Flashcards
What are the three forms materials come in?
Solids, liquids or gases
What are materials made up of?
particles
What are the properties of a solid?
Have a fixed volume, fixed shape, high density, not easily squashed, don’t flow
What are the properties of a liquid?
Have a definite volume, match the shape of the container, have a medium density, not easily squashed, flow easily
What are the properties of a gas?
have no definite volume (fill the space), same shape as the container, low density, easily squashed, flow easily
What are the particles like in a solid? Draw a diagram
they are all tightly packed together
What are the particles like in a liquid? Draw a diagram
they are clustered together but with space to move around.
What are the particles like in a gas? Draw a diagram
They have a lot of space to move around. They are not tightly clustered
What are the 5 processes in changing states?
Melting, freezing, subliming, condensing, boiling
Subliming is?
going from a solid to a gas
Melting is?
going from a solid to a liquid
Freezing is?
going from a liquid too a solid
Boiling is?
going from a liquid to a gas
Condensing is?
going from a gas to a liquid
Does changing state affect the mass?
NO
