Plant Reproduction Flashcards
What are the Stamens?
They are the male parts of a flower. They consist of the anther and the filament. The anther contains the pollen grains. The filament supports the anther
What are the carpels?
The female parts of a flower they consist of the stigma, style and ovary. The ovary contains the female sex cells inside the ovules
What are the sepals?
they are green leaf-like and protect the flower in the bud. They are found below the main petals
What are petals?
They are often brightly coloured to attract the insects attention for pollination.
What is pollination?
Its getting pollen to the stigma
What types of pollination are there?
Self pollination, Cross pollination
What is Self pollination?
pollen is transferred from stamen to stigma on the same plant
What is cross pollination?
pollen is transferred from the stamen of one plant to the stigma of a different plant.
What methods of cross pollination are there?
Insect or wind
What is insect pollination?
The sticky pollen sticks to the insect which delivers it to the next plant in search for nectar
What is wind pollination?
Long filaments so that a lot of pollen is blown away
When the pollen grain lands on the stigma what happens?
a pollen tube grows from the grain down through the style into the ovary. The nucleus from the pollen goes down the tube to join with the female cell. Fertilisation occurs when the two nuclei join.
What are ways seeds can be spread?
wind, animal, explosion or drop and roll
Example for wind spreading seeds?
dandelion seed, sycamore
Example for animal spreading?
Tomato seeds and a burlock
