Forces Flashcards
What is air resistance?
The force on an object. moving through the air that causes it to slow down
What is friction?
The force that resists movement because of contact between surfaces
What is mass?
the amount of matter (stuff) a thing is made up of
What is a Newton?
The unit of force, symbol N
What is weight?
The force of the Earth on an object due to its mass
What is tension?
A stretching force
What is lift?
A force pushing upwards on an object flying in the air
What is upthrust?
A force pushing upwards on an object in a liquid
What is thrust?
A push caused by an engine
What is lubrication?
a substance that reduces friction
What is compression?
To squash into a smaller space
What is extension?
The amount by which an object gets longer when a force us applied
What are balanced forces?
Forces acting on an object that are the same size but act in opposite directions. It stops movement
What is gravity?
a non-contact force between two masses
Weight=
mass ✕ gravitational field strength
What is a force?
A push or a pull
What device do you use to measure force?
A Newton Meter
What can forces make objects do?
Speed up, slow down, change direction, turn, change shape
What is an unbalanced force?
Forces acting on an object that are different sizes but act in opposite directions. It causes movement
What is a force diagram?
A diagram to show forces acting on a object
What can you do with forces on the same line?
You can add or subtract forces
A bus has 100N of thrust and 100N of air resistance. What is happening to the bus?
It is not accelerating. It moves slowly
100N-100N= 0N
A plane has 100N of thrust and 500N of air resistance. What is happening to the plane?
It is strongly decelerating.
100N-500N= -400N
A car has a rocket strapped to its roof. The rockets has 200N of thrust. The car has 50N of thrust. There is 20N of air resistance. What is happening to the car?
It is strongly accelerating.
200N+50N= 250N
250N-20N=230N
