where are sperm made?
the testes
what is ejaculated from the penis during sex?
semen which is sperm mixed with a liquid
what is an egg?
a female sex cell or a gamete
what releases an egg every 28 days?
ovaries
where does the egg go?
through the fallopian tubes and womb/ uterus
what might the egg meet?
sperm and it might be fertilised. if it isn’t fertilised it dies
What is the Menstrual cycle?
It’s the changes the uterus undergoes over a month
what is the 4 stages of the menstrual cycle?
STAGE 1: uterus breaks down (period)- Day 1-4
STAGE 2: lining of the uterus builds up ready for egg implantation- Day 4-13
STAGE 3: the egg is released - Day 14
STAGE 4: if no egg fertilised lining of uterus maintained until day 28/1
What are the 5 stages of fertilisation?
STAGE 1: Ovulation (egg released from a ovary)
STAGE 2: Copulation 9 sperm released from penis into vagina during intercourse
STAGE 3: fertilisation occurs in the fallopian tube( nuclei of egg and sperm join and become a zygote
STAGE 4: cell division- 24 hours after fertilisation the egg divides into 2 by 4 days its divided into 32 cells and is an embryo
STAGE 5: implantation- about 1 week after fertilisation the embryo starts to implant itself into the wall of the uterus and the placenta starts to develop
How long does gestation last?
about 39 weeks
At 1 month into gestation describe what the embryo is like.
about 6mm long and has a brain, heart, eyes, ears and legs
At 9 weeks into gestation describe what the embryo is like
about 25mm long and is completely formed. it is now called a foetus.
At 3 months into gestation what does the Foetus look like?
about 54mm long and looks more like a baby
At 5 months into gestation what is the foetus like?
about 160mm long. It kicks and finger nails can be felt
