Energy Stores and Transfers Flashcards
How many energy stores are there?
7
What are the seven energy stores?
Thermal, magnetic, chemical, electrostatic, gravitational potential, kinetic, elastic potential
What is a thermal energy store?
The hotter it is, the higher it’s temperature and the more energy in the thermal store
What is a magnetic energy store?
Two magnets that attract or repel each other have energy in their magnetic energy store
What is a chemical energy store?
Anything with energy which can be released by a chemical reaction. e.g. food, fuels and batteries
What is an electrostatic energy store?
Two electrical charges that attract or repel each other have energy in their electrostatic store
What is a gravitational potential store?
Anything in a gravitational field (can fall) has energy in its store. The higher an object goes the more energy it has
What is a kinetic store?
Anything that moves has energy in it’s kinetic store
What is a elastic potential store?
Anything stretched has energy in it’s store.
Can energy be transferred between different stores?
Yes
How many ways can energy be transferred?
4
What are the ways energy can be transferred?
Mechanically, heating, electrically or light and sound
What is an electrical pathway?
Electric charges move around a circuit
What is a mechanical pathway?
When a force makes something move
What is a heating pathway?
When energy is transferred from a hotter object to a colder object
What is a light and sound pathway?
When light or sound carries energy from one place to another
What is conduction?
An object is heated the particles start to vibrate more. particles pass heat to each other by knocking into each other. This process can only happen when the objects are touching.
What is radiation?
All objects radiate invisible waves. The hotter an object is the more energy it radiates. They do not have to be touching.
What is an insulator?
an insulator transfers heat slowly. e.g. plastic
