Solids, Liquids And Gases Flashcards
How are the particles arranged in a solid?
The particles are arranged neatly and regularly. All of them are touching.
Are the particles well-bonded in a solid?
Yes, their bonds are very strong. They can only be moved with force.
Do the particles in a solid move?
Yes, they vibrate very slightly.
How are the particles arranged in a liquid?
They are touching, but in a random arrangement.
Are the particles well-bonded in a liquid?
Yes, they have strong bonds but can be poured easily.
How do the particles move in a liquid?
They move around each other.
How are the particles arranged in a gas?
They are very far apart, in a random arrangement.
Are the particles well-bonded in a gas?
No, their bonds are very weak and can be moved very easily.
How do the particles move in a gas?
They move quickly in all directions.
What is the boiling point for liquid?
100°C
What happens when you heat particles in a solid?
When particles are heated, the particles themselves DO NOT EXPAND. Instead, the heat causes them to vibrate, because they absorb the heat energy. The distance between the particles grows, and the solid becomes larger.
What is the process of enlarging a solid by heating it called?
Expansion.
