Light Flashcards
What is refraction?
The slowing down and bending of light when it enters a prism. Each colour is refracted by a slightly different amount.
What is dispersion?
When light is refracted and each colour splits out separately. This is how a rainbow is formed.
During refraction, which colours are bent the most and least?
Red is bent the least while violet is bent the most.
What is the ray of incidence?
The ray of incidence is the ray travelling towards the reflective surface.
What is the angle of incidence?
The angle between the ray of incidence and the normal.
What is the normal?
The line perpendicular to the reflective surface.
What is the ray of reflection?
The ray of light that has been reflected.
What is the angle of reflection?
The angle between the ray of reflection and the normal.
What is the similarity between the angle of incidence and reflection?
They are always equal.
What ways do the light rays turn during the process of refraction?
When the light enters the medium, it bends towards the normal, and when it leaves, it bends away from the normal.
What is the normal in terms of refraction?
The normal is the line running vertically through the medium.
What is the emergent ray?
The ray that leaves the medium after refracting.
