Solids, Liquids And Gases Flashcards
How are the particles in a solid arranged?
Particles are close together
Arranged in a regular pattern
Can vibrate in a fixed position but cannot move
How are the particles in a liquid arranged?
Close together (should be touching in a diagram) More energy than in solid Arranged randomly
How are the particles in a gas arranged?
Very weak forces between particles
Very spaced out and have more energy
What is required for decomposition?
A source of energy such as heat (thermal decomposition) or light or electricity (electrolysis)
Electrolysis of water?
Water ➡ hydrogen + oxygen
What is an element?
Something that contains only one type of atom
Each atom has the same number of protons
What is a compound?
A combination of two or more elements in fixed proportions joined by bonds
What is a molecule?
2 or more non metals which are chemically bonded (not only elements- possibly atoms too)
What is a mixture?
Elements and compounds that are mixed together but not chemically bonded
