Making Salts Flashcards
What common salts are soluble?
Sodium
Potassium
Ammonium
All ** are soluble
Nitrates
Common chlorides are *** except ***
Soluble except silver chloride
Common sulfates are ***, except those of ** and ***
Soluble, except for those of barium and calcium
Common carbonates are ** except for those of….?
Insoluble except
Sodium
Potassium
Ammonium
What method should i use to make a salt that is not soluble?
The precipitation method
What method should i use to make a salt that is soluble but not potassium sodium or ammonium?
The excess metal/base method
How to make a salt of sodium potassium or ammonium?
Use the titration method
What is the precipitation method?
Taking two soluble salts and reacting them to form a precipitate
It is then filtered and washed with pure water
Then its left to dry
What is the excess base/metal method?
Reacting acid with a metal or an insoluble base.
- Solid is weighed and added in small portions to the acid - excess solid is added to ensure all of the acid is neutralised
- The mixture is heated to speed up the reaction
- The solution is filtered using a filter funnel and filter paper to remove the excess solid
- The solution is left to crystalise
Examples of an insoluble base?
Metal
Metal oxide
Metal carbonate
What is acid alkali titration?
- A known volume of acid is pipettes into a conical flask ad an indicator is added
- The alkali is added slowly using a burette until the indicator shows pH 7 (neutral) so that all of the acid is neutralised
- The volume of the alkali needed for neutralisation is noted
- The solution is transferred to an evaporating dish and left to crystalise
