Adjuvant Therapy
Treatment given in addition to primary, main or initial treatment.Ex: systemic therapy following surgery to remove mass
Neoadjuvant Therapy
Therapy given prior to the main treatment- ex: chemo to shrink size prior to surgery
Remission
Temporary end to the medical signs and symptoms of disease. Absence of disease activity.
Cure
Permanent end to specific instance of disease. Cancer considered cure if no cancer detected 5 years after dx. Can still return
Prognosis
Likely outcome of cancer based on survival rates, type of cancer, overall health, response to treatment
5 year survival rate
Percentage of people in study/ tx group alive 5 years after dx or began tx. Disease may or may not have come back
5 year disease free survival rate
Percentage of people alive 5 years who have complete remission of disease.
