Soft Tissue Tumors (Pathology) Flashcards
7 yo child
large swelling increasing over 3 yrs
circumscribed, lobular/nonencapsulated mass
mature adipose tissue w/small vessels
lipoma
lipoblast
bad - seen in liposarcomas. bizzarre nucleus, vesicles of lipid
53 yo man fast growing (6 wks) mass. biopsy shows very cellular tissue with atypical cells and a lipoblast
liposarcoma
rapidly growing small, benign fibrous proliferation on subcutis, flexor aspects of arms in young adults. Rapid growth, painful.
nodular fasciitis
reactive proliferation
After blunt trauma, mass in lower limb.
Shows well formed woven bone at periphery, but immature bone at center (meaning?)
Myositis Ossificans
means not malignant
contracture in hand, often bilateral
superficial fibromatosis
contracture in penis
peyronie disease
contracture of plantar surface of feet
Ledderhose disease
pediatric, female predominance, extra-abdominal mass.
deep fibromatosis
adult fibromatosis gender preference
none (keloids)
microscopic appearance of fibromatosis
bland cells, no mitotic figures, no necrosis
tumore of mesenchmal origin. malignant fibroblasts on collagen background. herringbone.
fibrosarcoma
age of fibrosarcoma of bone
any, but Dx in 4th decade
location of fibrosarcoma of bone
tibia and femur
35-55 yo soft tissue of thigh & posterior knee. large, painless mass deep to fascia with ill-defined margin.
soft tissue fibrosarcoma
prognosis of adult fibrosarcoma of soft tissue
bad
prognosis of infantile fibrosarcoma of soft tissue
good
non-cancerous growth of dermal histiocytic cells. legs & arms, persists for years, firm nodules, tethered to underlying fibrous tissue
dermatofibroma
bigger dermal mass invading deeper subcutaneous tissue
dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP)
cellular origin of dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans
unclear. capacity to differentiate into all 3 cell types, so maybe pluripotent
most common soft-tissue sarcoma in late adult life
malignant fibrous histiocytoma
spread of mets from sarcomas
hematogenous (lungs!)
most important prognostic factor for malignant fibrous histiocytoma
clinical stage
fish flesh
rhabdomyosarcoma
muscle cell tumor
rhabdomyosarcoma
age of rhabdomyosarcoma
children <10 2/3
cell types in rhabdomyocarcoma
rhabdomyoblasts
most common locations of rhabdomyosarcoma (6)
base of skull around eye head/neck/nose/throat arms/legs urinary system reproductive organs
cell types in rhabdomyosarcoma
strap cells - elongated, may resemble muscle w/cross striations
benign uterine tumor
leiomyoma
cell types in leioma
cigar-shaped cells, no mitotic figures, no nuclear atypia.
May be large zones of ischemic necrosis or degenerative change.
uterine mass with hemorrhagic necrosis
leiomyosarcoma
survival indicators for leiomyosarcoma
clinical stage, then histological grade
cell types in leiomyosarcoma
cigar-shaped cells & many mitotic figures.
mets of leiomyosarcoma
lung, hematogenous - cause of mortality
