Soft tissue healing Flashcards
how long is the acute phase of soft tissue healing?
0 hrs - 72 hrs
how long is the repair phase of soft tissue healing?
3 days - 21 days
how long is the remodelling phase of soft tissue healing?
1 year +
what are the 3 phases in the soft tissue healing process called
acute, repair, remodelling
what is the primary and secondary responses in the acute phase?
primary - pain and whats been damaged
secondary - swelling
what is the 3 sources of irritation in the acute phase?
chemical, biomechanical and thermal
what is the process of the acute phase?
- vasoconstriction for 10 mins
- blood cells die and release histamine
- vasodilation
- blood thickens and WBC release
- WBC attack the damaged bacteria
- platelets the clot the area and fix the damage
- fibrinogen mesh traps red blood cells and eventually forms a stable blood clot
what is the process of the repair phase?
cellular:
1. a type of white blood cells (phagocytes) remove debris and produce toxic chemicals
- the fibroplasia peaks at 14-21 days when scar tissue forms
vascular:
1. recalculation and capillary budding happens
- increase in nutrition and oxygen - helps to repair the body
what is the process of the remodelling phase?
- alignment happens along the lines of stress
- resynthesis of muscle tissue
- collagen synthesises and attracts fibroblasts to the would to maintain structure
what are the 5 signs of inflammation?
pain
swelling
heat
discolouration
loss of function
what can affect the healing process
severity of injury
diet
age
sleep
fitness levels
how well they protect it
alcohol
drugs
