postural imbalances Flashcards
what are common deviations of postural imbalances?
common deviations:
elevated shoulders - upper traps - stress is the common cause
protracted scapular - tight chest muscles and is commonly caused by everyday habits
difference in keyholes - a common cause is an indication that there’s an issue in somewhere else in the body
head rotation - neck problems
spine misalignment - functional scoliosis
pelvis rotation - way the person stand
difference in muscle bulk - normally more muscular on their dominant side
hip hike - QL
knocked knees / bow legs - hereditary
external feet rotation - piriformis tightness and this could be from a pinched nerve and caused by how they stand, drive and shapes of car seats or stuff in their back pockets
flat feet - pronation - if it corrects when walking it doesn’t matter
Achilles differences - if they’ve injured it before
what is the anterior and posterior tilt norms?
men: 10 - 15
women: 15 - 20
which muscles are short in an anterior/posterior tilt?
hip flexors, iliopsoas, erector spinae, rectus femoris and quadratus lumborum
which muscles are long in an anterior/posterior tilt?
abdominal muscles and hamstrings
how to help anterior/posterior tilt?
stretching the tight muscles and strengthening the weak muscles
upper cross syndrome: what are the tight muscles?
pectoral muscles
upper trapezius
levator scapulae
upper cross syndrome: what are the weak muscles?
deep neck flexors
rhomboids
serratus anterior
what are the signs/symptoms about upper cross syndrome?
protracted head
increased cervical lordosis - curve in the neck
tight muscles
weak muscles
protracted shoulders
upper back pain
upper-neck pain
possible lower cross syndrome
pain/numbness/tingling in the arms
lower cross syndrome: what are the tight muscles?
erector spinae
iliopsoas
rectus femoris
lower cross syndrome: what are the weak muscles?
glute maximus
abdominal muscles
lower cross syndrome: what are the signs/symptoms?
anterior tilt
weak/under-firing glutes
increased lordosis
tight muscles
weak muscles
QL can cause pain from inappropriate activation
tendelenburg gait - as a person puts pressure on their leg the hip pops out further
back pain
possible sciatic compressions
