sodium and water balance Flashcards
where is ADH AKA vasopressin released from
post pit
what affect does ADH have in the body
increases BP by causing water reabsorption from kidney tubules
what affect does mineralcorticoid aldosterone have on Na and K
causes Na reabsorption via K/H exchanger in kidney tubules - increased steroid causes increased sodium
where is Na confined to and therefore lost too
EXC
how do you manage decreased sodium from Na loss/ decreased Na intake
give sodium
how do you manage decreased Na from decreased H2O excretion eg SIADH or increased water drinking
remove water
how do you manage increased sodium from decreased Na loss/ increased Na intake
remove Na
how do you manage increased sodium from increased water loss or decreased water intake
raise water
how does too much ADH cause hyponaetraemia
causes the blood to become dilute and decreased osmolarity of Na
what is Syndrome of inappropriate ADH (SIADH)
too much ADH release from post pit
what are symptoms of SIADH
euvolemic Hyponatraemia, N+V, cramps and tremors, depression, cerebral oedema: seizures, psychosis, coma
how do you treat SIADH
reduce fluid intake and give loop diuretics eg furosemide
