Face to face structured interviews
What does the CSEW use in terms of participants?
A representative sample of adults and children
What does the CSEW not include?
Thefts from businesses, shops, possession of drugs, sexual crimes, prostitution and murder
What crime related topics does the CSEW focus on?
Views of participants on antisocial behaviour and the effectiveness of the police
How many offences did the CSEW estimate that adults (16+) experienced for the year ending June 2022?
9.4 million offences
How many violent offences were recorded in the year ending September 2022?
1.1 million
What are the disadvantages of the CSEW?
- Jock Young (1988), 20-25% refuse to take part so the full picture isn’t shown - Ellingworth (1995), it’s not representative in location and age - Box states Marxists would focus on upper class - Ellingworth and Pease, repeat victimisation makes it hard to measure extent
What is Box’s opinion on victim surveys such as the CSEW in the eyes of Marxist sociologists?
Marxist sociologists would focus on the crimes that are committed by the powerful upper class and whether victims feel that they can report such crimes without fear of intimidation or exploitation. This might affect the ability for victims to report their experiences in the CSEW.
What is an advantage of the CSEW?
- A response rate of 75% is good - it can be used to complement police recorded crime so that the researchers can investigate the true extent of crime
