Action depends on meaning
EX: I sit under a tree because it is shady and I find it restful
Different people assign different meanings to things
EX: someone comes by and says: trees are infested with ants… so they will avoid it
The meaning of something can change (not permanent)
EX: I sit under the tree and get bit by an ant.. I might now avoid trees

sanctions: lower pay, getting fired, bad reputation
conformity
the process where an individual will alter or change their behaviour, thoughts, feelings or attitudes to follow the beliefs, rules or guidelines of other people in the group.
cultural norm - Laws
- Rules developed by the society
- Laws promote social control so that people follows the mores of society.
factor affecting conformity
Group Unity- Groups that are united or in total agreement can exert great pressure to conform on someones opinion.
