Etic
An approach that looks at behaviour from outside a culture and attempts to derive universal patterns of behaviour.
Emic
An approach that looks at behaviour from inside a culture and attempts to derive patterns of behaviour for that one culture.
Enculturation
The learning and maintenance of behaviours from our home culture
Acculturation
Adoption of the norms and behaviours of a new culture

Hofstede’s way of describing how the cultural values and norms of society influence various aspects of human behaviour
Eg. Masculinity vs femininity, individualism vs collectivism
Hikikomori
A condition commonly found in young Japanese men who stay in their rooms, socially isolate themselves, and this can last for years on end. This is a culture-bound syndrome
