Cognitive terminology Flashcards
Transactive memory
Learning where to find things, instead of learning the thing itself
Heuristic
A mental shortcut;straightforward rule of thumb
System one thinking
Fast, non reliable, focuses on what it sees, bases decisions on schema, least amount of effort
System two thinking
Concentrated effort, more reliable, slower, more logical thinking
Cognitive miser
I don’t know, I don’t care, I don’t have time, the brain not wanting to do any work
Multi-Store Memory Model
Information goes into sensory memory, then with attention goes into short term memory, and with encoding goes into long term memory, but without rehearsal, information is forgotten
Primacy effect
Remembering things that came at the start
Recency effect
Remembering things that came at the end
Working Memory Model
Central executive is the main part, where information is then transferred to the phonological loop (inner voice), episodic buffer (the glue, time sequencing) or visuospacial sketchpad (inner scribe, seing things in your mind), and then can be transferred to CE or long term memory storage
Accommodation
When existing schema are replaced by new ones
Assimilation
When you add information to an existing schema
