Sociocultural Factors Flashcards
1
Q
Family
A
- Very first social group > teach you different behaviours
- Provide the environment you grow up in
- Unsettled/lack of cohesion in family = unhealthy behaviours + strained relationships
- Links to individuals’ health status (positive or negative)
2
Q
Peer Group
A
- Young people typically turn to peers for advice
- Young people > peer pressure >risk taking behaviours > negative health status
- e.g- illicit drugs, binge drinking, drunk driving
- negative = higher morbidity+mortality rates
3
Q
Education
A
- Higher education = lowered mental health problems/issues
- More likely to be aware of health behaviours
- e.g: awareness of nutrition + physical activity = prioritised health choices
- Interrelates with income and employment (high education>better employment> higher income)
4
Q
Employment
A
- Develop new skills, sense of purpose
- Some people experience boredom or unsatisfaction with leads to low confidence+low self-esteem
- Develop new communication skills and productive relationships
- Can provide high or low income based on education

Q
Income
A
- Has the most impact on money available for youth
- Influences how a young person grows up
- Parental income has an effect on how much money can be spent on essentials (e.g: food, transport, education, health care)
- Access to money = promoting dimensions of health and wellbeing
6
Q
Access to Health Information
Barriers? Positives? Negatives?
A
- Young people mostly use the internet to find information:
BARRIERS: money, confidentiality, privacy, distance, time
POSITIVES: increase confidence (knowledge), reassurance, avoid embarrassment, telehealth, no travel
NEGATIVES: unprofessional, increase worry, inaccurate for you personally, conspiracy, false
7
Q
Housing
A
- Unsafe housing = unpreventable accidents which lead to injury
- Inadequate facilities (kitchens to prepare, cook and store food) = disease or illness
- Poor air quality (e.g: smoke) = respiratory issues
- All above contribute to mortality and/or morbidity rates
