Health Status Indicators Flashcards
What is Self-Assessed health status? How is it measured?
An individual’s own perception of their health and well-being.
Measured on a scale:
POOR>FAIR>GOOD>VERY GOOD> EXCELLENT
What is Life expectancy? How is it measured?
The number of years of life on average remaining to an individual at a particular age.
Measured on averages of a population
What is Mortality? How is it measured?
Refers to death, particularly at a population level.
YLL - Years of life lost due to premature death
- 1 YLL = 1 yr life lost
- Life expectancy - age of death = total YLL’s contributed to data
What is Morbidity? How is it measured?
Refers to ill health in an individual such as disease, illness, disability or injury.
YLD - years of ‘healthy’ life lost due to disability
- 1 YLD = 1 ‘healthy’ yr of life lost due to time lived with disease, illness or injury.
What is Burden of Disease? How is it measured?
A concept that combines mortality data with morbidity data so that conditions that contribute differently to death and illness can be compared.
DALY - Disability Adjusted Life Years
- 1 DALY = YLL+YLD
Define Rates of Hospitalisation
Rate of which individuals enter hospital due to disease or injuries. (youth)
What is Core Activity Limitation? How is it measured?
When an individual has difficulty with any of the three core activities (self-care, mobility or communication)
4 levels:
- MILD: Simply require an aid (e.g walking stick)
-MODERATE: Have difficulty with the task.
-SEVERE: Sometimes need help but not always.
- PROFOUND: Always require help
What is Psychological Distress? How is it measured?
Relates to unpleasant feelings or emotions that impact an individual’s level of functioning.
Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K10 Scale). Asks 10 questions about negative emotional and mental states about the previous 30 days. Rates from low, moderate, high or very high based on answers (0-4)
