What’s Acculturation
Acculturation is the process of cultural change that occurs when individuals or groups of people from different cultures come into contact.
Assimilation: open to change and unconcerned of losing original culture, openly interact w/other cultures
Integration: When individuals hold onto trad values but desire daily interactions w/other cultures.
Separation: Value original culture and against losing touch, actively avoid interacting w/other cultures
Marginalization: little interest in maintaining original culture and interacting w/other

PROCEDURE
1,375 South Asian male migrant workers in the UAE
- over half lived in the UAE for 6+ years
- most common occupations were drivers, laborers, agricultural workers, and construction workers.
- there was also a comparison group of men of the same age in their culture of origin
RESULTS
- migrant workers in the UAE had significantly higher body mass index (BMI) than the comparison group
- the longer they stayed in the UAE, the higher their BMI became
- prevalence of obesity was higher in migrants than in the comparison group
CONCLUSION
Acculturation has been linked to changes in diet and obesity
