STUDY 1 RESEARCHER & AIM
Byrne : relationship between interpersonal attraction and attitude similarity
S1 PROCEDURE
- participants had to rank several issues on their importance (from most important to least).religion, marriage, etc.
- two weeks later, they were shown an anonymous questionnaire from another PPTS and they had to indicate their feelings towards the stranger and rate this person on perceived intelligence and morality.
the questionnaire was faked so that response was one of the following: - identical on all issues
- opposite all issues
- similar important
- similar unimportant
S1 RESULTS
similar attitudes -> positive ratings
similarity on important issues associated w/pos ratings than similarity on unimportant
What is Equity Theory
According to Walster, that both partners have a similar level of profit (rewards minus the costs).
A lack of equity means that one partner under benefits, and the other over benefits. This causes dissatisfaction in the long-term.

-advertised computer dance for students in 1st week of college
-first 376 M&F volunteers let in for $1
-4 judges rated students’ attractiveness to measure social desirability
-ppts filled in questionnaire
-dates paired randomly
-dance held 2 days later
-6 months later, ppts asked if they’d dated partners since
S2 FINDINGS
people with higher physical attractiveness ratings were found to have more harsh judgement to their dates
- physical attractiveness was the more significant factor in how much each date likes the other
- physical attractiveness was the best indicator on if they would have a second date
- partners were more likely to have a second date if they were similar in physical attractiveness
S2 CONCLUSION
These findings support the matching hypothesis and indicate how important physical attractiveness is in forming a relationships.
