What were the Junker’s initial role in society?
Wealthy and hereditary aristocrat that led GV and the army

They were over represented in the Reichstag and dominated the Chancellorship

Lacked control over lands not in Prussia
Growth in cities meant that they lost some power in the Reichstag

Made them less powerful and gave large areas of land less value

They forced him to put on tarrifs in 1879 to help slow industrialisation
He formed the Agrarian League in 1893

Universal suffrage
Forced to join middle classes and industrial elite to stay powerful in politics

SPD got 7 seats with 23% of the vote and Junker Conservatives got 212 seats with 16% of the vote

They won 110 seats and 4 million votes (1 in 3) making it the largest party

Junker Chancellor Bethamn-Hollweg was at odds with the SPD dominated Reichstag

Better technology but this meant less jobs and many workers moved into the cities

They didn’t have the vote or be able to sit in the Reichstag due to being seen as too emotional

Focused on the home and supporting the man as well as bringing up children
What was women’s role in the workplace in 1871?
Not in professional services, in secretarial work, money managed by the man of the household
