What do liberals disagree on concerning the extent of society?

A

Classical-no such thing as a society merely a collection of egotistical, self interested + self reliant individuals. + enabling state limits individualism.
Modern- Recognise our desire to live in harmony with one another- Betty Friedan and Rawls

What do liberals disagree on concerning state involvement in society and the idea of positive and negative freedoms?

A

classical liberalssuch as Locke- focused on three fundamental rights- negative freedoms in place where laws only in place to prevent these being taken away
modern liberals such as Friedan and Rawls- build on rights- Friedan getting rid of laws which discriminate against women/ minorities. + Rawls veil of ignorance- remove economic impediments. (more positive).

BUT.. mill agrees with modern liberals later on- state moral right 2 edu

A

modern liberals- end discrimination- **Betty Friedan- **Women equal to men + stop discrimination laws concening African Americans.
-John Locke- ‘where there is no law there is no freedom’- fundamental to the protection of liberty.
