What is meant by natural rights?

A

-Laws which are universal, fundamental and inalienable (and cannot be replaced by human laws).
-Developed during the time of the enlightenment.

What are some agreements over natural rights?

A

Classical + modern- Lockes social contract theory ensures this- we are rational to allow state to protect us. Locke- ‘life, liberty and estate’. Rights protected by law,

Heavily linked with the US declaration of independence.

What are some disagreements over natural rights?

A

Classical- government should not interfere too much- enabling state limits individualism.
Modern- includes groups that would have been excluded in referfence to a ‘human family’ Rawls +enabling state to achieve natural rights. BIG STATE to protect individualism.
