What are norms?
Unwritten and unspoken rules of society that control certain aspects of our behavior.
What are values?
The beliefs and principles of a community that guide an individual.
What is nature?
When you are born with the ability
e.g. Blinking
What is nurture?
When you learn things from your environment
e.g. Speaking
What is primary soclialisation?
The life long process where we learn basic norms and behaviors from the family.
What is secondary socilaisation?
When we learn other ways of behaving from agents/institutions like the media, education, peer groups, work and religion.
What are the formal agents of social control?
Police
Legal system
Courts
Government
Military
What are the informal agents of social control?
Family
Peer groups
Education
Work place
Religion

What is social control?
The process of persuading or forcing individuals to conform to norms and values, can be formal or informal.
What are the processes of social control?
Imitation
Official rules
Sanctions
Inclusion/Exclusion
Peer pressure
Stereotyping
What is a role?
A part of a person playing within a group or society. which will have a status attached to it, everyone had several statuses=status set.
What are the two types of statuses?
Ascribed=A person being born with that status.
e.g. Prince William
Achieved= a status you have worked for.
e.g. Teacher/Doctor.
What are spectacular subcultures, and give examples
Social group that conforms to mainstream norms and values but have their own that are distinct
Punks- spiky hair, studs, chains, belief in non-conformity
Goths- Behave introvertly, Morbid fashion, typically black hair.
What is high culture?
Culture for the elite/upper class, formed by those who believe in social closure as they appreciate the arts.
e.g. Polo/ Ballet/ Opera
What is popular culture?
Culture for ordinary people engages with mass forms of entertainment like Hollywood films.
What is global culture?
The result of globalisation- the world becoming more interconnected socially, politically and economically.
e.g. McDonald’s, Apple.
What is consumer culture?
A culture in which the consumption of goods and services is the norm.
e.g. Online shopping
What is cultural diversity?
Includes a diverse range of groups from different cultural backgrounds.
e.g. Chinatown, Southall
What is Multicultralsim?
Refers to different cultures living equally in society.
e.g. World Food Isles
