weeks - traditional identity
Heterosexual individuals do not need to make a statement about their sexual identity because it is the norm but homosexual individuals have to state if they are gay/lesbian as it is not an expectation.

Argues homosexuality is a process. For a male, the ‘homosexual career’ is a subculture that makes homosexual characteristics a norm, because the rest of society does not see a man being as normal.

PEERS - ‘three Fs’: football, fucking, and fighting to suppress their emotions. If they were to express fear, intimidation, or love they are seen as feminine and condemned. So they grew up to become inexpressive adults.
Rich - women bring oppressed
Argues women take on a ‘compulsory heterosexuality’ ensuring their availability to men being socialised in a subordinate role. argues women aren’t necessarily inherently heterosexual, having a lesbian identity is abnormal because it’s a threat to male domination and power over women.
The equality act 2010
makes it unlawful to discriminate against any individual on grounds of sexuality.

Argues education has helped change perceptions due to the education system having to promote inclusivity and diversity of all sexual identities.
Jackson
Argues that women’s sexuality was being less oppressed due to his studies of ‘ladettes’, they portrayed characteristics of heavy drinking, being rude and boisterous. As they were more open to these discussions it was seen as less oppression.
