addiction
a physical and/or psychological dependence upon substances or activities, including but not limited to alcohol, drugs, pills, food, sex, or gambling.
ageism
Discrimination against the elderly because of their age.
bioethics
Moral and ethical decisions associated with advanced technology in the healthcare
field.
blended family
A family formed by marriage or long-term relationship between partners
in which at least one partner brings children from a previous relationship into the
new family system.
child protective services
Mandated services provided by state social services agencies to
families who abuse or neglect their children, for the purpose of protecting
children whose safety is seriously endangered by the actions or inactions of their caretakers.
child welfare services
Social services that supplement or substitute for parental care and
supervision when parents are unable to fulfill parental responsibilities and that
improve conditions for children and their families.
clinical social worker
A person whose major focus is to provide clinical social work services - usually individual, group, or family counseling - often in a psychiatric, hospital, residential treatment, or mental health facility. An MSW is usually
required (also called psychiatric social worker in some settings).
custody
Legal charge given to a person requiring her/him to provide certain types of care and to exercise certain controls in regard to another individual, as in parent-child
custody.
deinstitutionalization
A philosophy that advocates care of individuals with
mental health problems and developmental disabilities in local community outpatient programs, whenever appropriate to the client’s needs, as opposed to
hospitalization in an institution
developmental disability
Severe, chronic disability resulting from physical or mental
impairment, usually prior to age 21, which results in substantial limitations of the
individual’s social, emotional, intellectual, and/or physical functioning: 75 percent of those with developmental disabilities are mentally retarded.
diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders (DSM)
A classification system of
types of mental disorders that incorporates both organic and environmental
factors, developed by the American Psychiatric Association for assessment and intervention purposes.
diversion
The process whereby individuals are diverted to programs outside the justice system, such as counseling or DWI classes.
dual career family
A family in which both partners/spouses have careers outside of the
family.
employee assistance program (EAP)
Workplace-sponsored program providing mental
health and social services to employees and their families; services may be
provided directly at the workplace, or through a contractual arrangement by a social services agency.
family
A group of individuals bonded together through marriage, kinship, adoption, or mutual agreement.
