How did World War 1 start?
World War 1 started after the Austrian-Hungrian, Archiduke Franz Ferdinard had been killed and assasinated by a extremist group from Serbia, which led to Austria invading Serbia. Germany declared war on Russia. Germany was scared France would attack, so they declared on France. Germany invaded Belgium and as Britain and France were aligned with Belgium they declared on Germany.

Russia
Who was part of the Triple Alliance?
Austria-Hungary, Germany, and Italy.
Who was part of the Triple Entente?
Russia, Britain, and France.
How did NZ get involved in WW1?
New Zealand got involved when Britain went to war on Germany as NZ is part of the Commonwealth as well as Australia, Canada, India, and other countries.
What was the first action that New Zealanders saw?
The first action they saw was the Seizure of Samoa that had been controlled by by Germany.
What was the major battles NZ fought in WW1?
They fought in the Western Front which was between Belgium and France to the North Sea. It was the desicive front during WW1. They fought in Gallipoli in 1915, the battle of the somme in 1916, and the battle of passchendaele in 1917.
Why was it hard to break the deadlock of trench warfare?
It was difficult as soldiers had to attack across open ground which made it easier for the defenders with machine guns which could fire 8 bullets per second. The state of no mans land was unsafe and had no protection. Barbed wire made it difficult for the opposition to come.
Why did the battle of the somme occur?
It happened because they were to pay for their involvement in the offence which was high.

Where was the battle of Passchendaele fought?
It was fought for control in the village near Ypres in Belgium.
