What is macronutrients?
a substance required by the body in large amounts for survival
What are micronutrients?
a chemical substance that is needed in small amounts to help with growth and metabolism
What are the types of macronutrients?
- protein
- carbohydrates
- fats
What are the types of micronutrients?
- vitamins
- minerals
Why do we need protein?
needed for growth and repair
Why do we need carbohydrates?
for energy
Why do we need fats?
needed for energy, protection, and insulation
What are food groups?
certain foods with the same nutrients are classified as a food groups, so there are different food groups as different foods may contain different minerals
What are all the food groups?
Vegetables and fruits
Grains
Dairy products
Meats
Fats, oils and others
What is the recommended serving for fruits and vegetables?
5-6 servings of vegetables a day and 2 servings of fruit a day.
What is the recommended serving for grains?
4-6 servings a day
What is the recommended serving for dairy products?
2-3 servings a day
What is the recommended serving for meats?
1-2 servings in a day
What is the recommended serving for fats, oils and extras?
There is no recommended serving, just consume in moderation.
What is a balanced plate?
When a plate has 1/2 fruit/veggies
1/4 grains
1/4 meats
