BRITISH passenger ship that was torpedoed and sunk by a German U Boat. There were about 1200 people on board and over 100 were Americans. The sinking did not make the USA want to enter the war, but we did look at the German’s and their aggression more seriously.

Dr. David Livingstone. Who was he? Where did he go, and why did he go there? What happened to him? What did he think of the people who lived there?

A

A great Explorer and Missionary. He was a Christian minister and he hoped that by opening up the heart of Africa, he could encourage more missionaries to come and convert more Africans to Christianity. He “discovered” that what he saw was actually the mist from a gigantic waterfall. Livingstone named it Victoria Falls. Like so many Europeans, Livingstone believed that Africans were less advanced. He died there due to travel and sickness.

What country was blamed for the death or Archduke Ferdinand? Who blamed them and what was the capital city of that country? What happened and what did it lead to?

A

Archduke Ferdinand and his wife Sophie, were on an official visit to Sarajevo, Bosnia, inspecting the troops. In Vienna, Austria, officials of the Austrian-Hungarian government were insisting that the young Serbian rebels were forced to kill the archduke by their government. Serbia denied that they had anything to do with it, but Austria-Hungary did not believe them. One the way to the hospital, the archduke’s chauffeur made a wrong turn, and ended up in an alley where he had to back up to turn around. The car was right next to the Serbian rebel, Gavarillo Princip, who fired twice at the archduke and once at Sophie. Both died almost immediately, but the chauffeur was not hurt.

The Great War
WWI was also called The Great War and the European War.
Many European’s were happy that WWI broke out because there were tensions for so long.
War began in July 1914
Within a few days, 6 million people were fighting in Europe
Germany is between France and Russia and they split their troops between these two countries to fight.
To get to France, Germany marches through Belgium, who was neutral. They ASSUMED they would defeat France fast and then they could take everyone to fight Russia.

Germany underestimated England. They ASSUMED that it would take England sooooo long to mobilize and come to Belgium’s defense that France would already be defeated. OOOPS.
