Q

List AND EXPLAIN the three lines of evidence that Wegener used to demostrate his theory.

A

Wegener use evidence such as fossil clues to prove that the continental drift happen. Wegener found like there is a certain type of fossil in this area and across the ocean is the same type of fossil. He also used rock clues, for his example he said that there are certain mountains in Europe that are the same as the Appalacian mountains. He also used climate clues which he says that in places where the weather is actually warm that has glacial action going on as well. That’s because those parts of the country were together at one point and they were close to the South Pole which is really cold.

15
Q

Australia, South America, and Africa were once located at the North Pole.
True or False

A

False

16
Q

Why do continents move?

A

because the seafloor spreads along the mid-ocean ridge

17
Q

What confirms that the process of seafloor spreading is occurring?

A

There are parallel magnetic stripes of similar composition on either side of the mid-ocean ridge.

18
Q

Who first compiled evidence for the theory of continental drift?

A

Alfred Wegener

19
Q

Who discovered seafloor spreading?

A

Henry Hess

20
Q

A fossil plant that helps support the theory of continental drift is ______________.

A

glossopteris

21
Q

The hypothesis that continents have slowly moved to their current locations is called _______________________.

A

Continental drift

22
Q

Scientists have observed that the continents move apart or come together at a speed of a few centimeters per _________________________.

A

A year

23
Q

The youngest rocks on the ocean floor are located ______.

A

At mid-ocean ridge

24
Q

What did Harry Hess use to make his important discovery?

A

Sonar

25
Q

Why was Alfred’s theory rejected?

A

He couldn’t explain how the continents moved.
