Social Psychological Explanation- Dysfunctional Families Flashcards
What is the double-blind theory in relation to Schizophrenia?
Its proposed that the symptoms of Schizophrenia were the result of communcation difficulties within their family
How might conflicting messages contribute to the development of Schizophrenia?
If the child is exposed to social situations with 2 conflicting meanings, it may incapacitate the child’s ability to respond correctly, which means the child will grow to view the world as a contradictuary in nature
What symptoms of Schizophrenia are explained by double blind theory?
Research has linked hallucinations and delusions as means of escaping the contradictory demands on a double blind situation
What is the link between expressed emotion (EE) and the relapse of Schozphrenic symptoms?
Research has linked a high level of negatively expressed emotion towards Scz people who had come home (e.g crictical comments, hostility and EOI) and their risk of relapse
What were the conclusions of Browns research regarding Schizophrenic peoples home they went to and the level of EE?
He found that the higher level of EE from caregivers, the more likely they were to relapse into an episode
What were some components of EE?
Critical comments - high EE
Hostility - high EE
Emotional over-involvment- High EE
Warmth - low EE
Why is the explanation of dysfunctional families hard to establish cause and effect with? (Evaluation)
Because we don’t know if communication difficulties cause Schizophrenia or if they are adapted as a result of the Schz child
Why is determining where double bind communication comes from a point of evaluation?
We don’t know the cause for trouble in communication so we cant use it as a sound explanation for Scz as we need futher elaboration
What is the research that supports EE for an explanation of Schizophrenia? (Evlulation)
Research showed that 53% of Scz people who had a high EE relative relapsed in within 9 months compared to 12% who relapsed with low EE relatives
Why is the issue of shared environment or shared genes significant? (Evaluation)
A large amount of the reseach for double bind theory uses family relationships however , family members will share genes and environment , so is it genes or is it dysfunctional families causing Scz
