Individual Differences Explanation- Psychodynamic Approach Flashcards
Explain the role of fixations for the Psychodynamic explanation of Schizophrenia
During the oral stage of development the libido receives satisfaction from stimulation of the mouth and lips , if a baby is fed too much or too little they may become fixated
Frued purposed that individuals with Schizophrenia become fixated during the first one to two months of oral development
Explain the role of regression for the Psychodynamic explanation of Schizophrenia?
If an adult experiences a large amount of stress they may regress back to the oral stage , which causes the ego to regress back to an earlier stage , this may be temporary or may continue over the long term
Explain why regression into the oral stage may cause someone to lose touch with reality
During the oral stage of development, the ego is very underdeveloped, meaning that it struggles to control the id’s impulses. Meaning that during regression schizoprenic people have the same ego as infants , which causes ‘primary narcissism’ which is seen in infants
Explain Reichmann’s (1948) ‘ Schizophrenic mother’ and its significance to the Psychodynamic approaches explanation for Schizophrenia
Reichmann believed that schizophrenics are distrustful and resentful of people due to rejection from their mums. She purposed that ‘Schizophrenic mothers’ stifile their childs emotional development while depriving the child of emotional security due to distance , which leaves them very vunerable when faced with stress
Why are Freudian concepts out of data? (Evaulation)
Fruedian concepts are out of data as the have historically struggled with creating a testible hypothesis as we can’t test any theories that they put foward, due to this fact , they concepts can’t be used for such a complex disorder
Why does the idea of schizophrenic mothers have inconsistent support?
Research found that 33 out of 45 cases of Schizophrenia had an overprotective mother, meaning that almost a third of cases did not have one. This is unconvincing evidence as whilst it suggests a relationship , other factors must come into play
Why is the Psychodynamic approaches faliure to produce effective treatment a point of evaluation?
Freud pruposed from the start that Scz patients as many of them lacked the necessary insight to take part.
Research found that psychoanalytic techniques can make symptoms worse
The failure to create a treatment suggests the ideas are built on shaky foundations
Why is the psychodynamic approach ignoring genetics so significant?
The Psychodynamic aprroach suggests that Scz is caused by early childhood expriences
But data from adoption studies shows that 10% of children with a Scz mother contracted Scz and 0% did with non-Scz mothers , which suggests genetic concordance
