Individual Differences Explanation- Cognitive Approach Flashcards
Explain how the Cognitive approach explains the negative symptoms of Schizophrenia
Beck et al (2008) implemented the idea of the negative triad which is used to explain depression and instead used it to explain SCZ
Beck claimed that a SCZ person would endorse their dysfunctional self beliefs about their preformance , their ability to enjoy pleasure and will have gloomy view
This explains negative symptoms of Scz such as emotional flatness
Explain the cognitive approaches theory of compromised mind with explaning Schizophrenia
Firth (1993) proposed that scz people had 3 areas of dysfunction within their cognitive systems
1- disorders of willed action
2- disorders of self monitoring
3- disorders of monitoring other peoples minds and thoughts
Explain how the incorrect appraisal of hallucinations is linked to Schizophrenia
Morrison (1998) suggests that triggers such as sleep deprevation may cause individuals to hear voices in mapadaptive ways
The individuals normally apraise these voices incorrectly (e.g from the devil) and act incorrectly
What were the 3 areas of Dysfunction that Firth (1992) highlighted?
Willed action
Self-monitoring
Monitoring other persons thoughts and intentions
Which symptoms of Schizophrenia does disorders of willed action explain (Firth 1992) ?
Negative and disorganised symptoms
What symptoms of Schizophrenia do disorders of self-monitoring explain?
They explain symptoms such as vocal hallucinations
What symptoms of Schizophrenia do disorders of monitoring other people’s thoughts and intentions explain?
It explains delusions of persecution
Why is the cognitive approaches explanation of schizophrenia considered reductionist? (Evaulation)
It is considered reductionist as theorists such as Firth claim that Schizophrenia is merely the dysfunction of mental processes , which is reductionist as it ignores factors such as home life
What does the supporting research for Schizophrenia suggests about Scz ability to process information? (Evaulation)
Research showed that Schiophrenic participants were slower on the Stroop test than ‘normal’ people, this supports the idea that Scz processing is worse
Why is the cognitive approaches explanation for Schizophrenia seen as uncomprehensive? (Evaluation)
Other Symptoms of Schizophrenia such as catatonic behaviour are not fully explained by the approach, it can explain the proximal symptoms but NOT the origins
Why does schizophrenia need a integrated model (Evaluation)
Because research has linked factors such as early life factors or social stressors to Schizophrenia. It is not sufficent to explain Scz as its not hollistic enough
