Groupthink
When groups make decisions based on ideas and solutions that arise within group without considering outside ideas because of pressure to conform and remain loyal to group (and stay with majority)
Polarization
When individuals in a group move toward a more extreme version of position they held before discussion
What’s conformity?
Act of matching behavior or belief with the group
For instance: wearing red shirt since everyone is wearing red
What’s compliance?
Changing behavior in direct response to request from a peer
Social loafing
When individual contributes less when they’re in group than they otherwise would by themselves
What’s bystander effect?
Individual responds less quickly when they are in a group then they otherwise would by themselves
What is deindividuation
Loss of individual identity, or less sense of self, due to large group
What are social norms used for?
For how to live in society. What’s right and wrong
Actively bad norm
Heteronormativity
Ableism
What is stigma?
Disapproval or dislike of an individual or group based on perceived differences
Deviance
A violation of social or cultural norm
