Nervous System (biology) Flashcards
What do sensory (afferent) neurons transmit?
They transmit sensory information from receptors to spinal cord and brain
What do motor (efferent) neurons transmit?
They transmit motor information from brain and spinal cord to muscles and glands
What are interneurons?
These are found in between other neurons and are related to reflexive behavior i.e. they send signals to spinal and muscles to hurry the first aid response
What are afferent neurons affected by?
Sensations like temperature, pain, taste, sound, and other stimuli
What do efferent neurons do?
They cause an effect like closing our eyes or extending our legs
What forms greymatter?
Cell bodies and dendrites
What forms white matter?
Myelinated axons of neurons. It has myelinated sheaths that allow for signals to be sent more quickly
What does vertebral column do?
It provides protection to the spinal cord along with flexibility
