Chapter 2.5 Flashcards
Sensation refers to
Raw sensory information
Perception refers to
Integrated information
How does bottom-up processing work and what kind of info is used?
Uses the provided visual stimuli to perceive an image right at that moment.
Used when sensory information is unfamiliar or highly complex
Example of bottom-up processing?
Seeing a new car with one tire i.e. something you’ve no clue about
What does Top-down processing rely on?
Relies on prior experience and context i.e. something you’ve seen already
Example of Top-Down processing
Seeing a Honda Civic car that you’ve seen before
What is perceptual organization?
Way we structure sensory information into a coherent whole
What’s depth perception?
To determine object’s distance
Gestalt principles refer to how our brains organize info? But how do they?
Describes how our brain likes to perceive and interpret certain shapes simpler rather than complex
What’s law of proximity?
Objects close to each other are perceived as a group
What do subjective contour perceive?
Contours that aren’t really present
