Social Learning Theory Flashcards
1
Q
Assumptions
A
- Agreed with behaviourists that behaviour is a learnt from experience
- Suggests learning actually occurs through imitation of others within a social context
- So: behavior is learnt DIRECTLY though conditioning but also INDIRCTLY though vicarious reinforcement
2
Q
Vicarious reinforcement
A
- Observing behaviour of others
- Will imitate if behaviour is seen to be rewarded rather than punished
- Importance lies in the observed consequence of behaviour
3
Q
Mediational processes
A
Cognitive factors that mediate in process of learning to determine if a new behaviour is learnt
4
Q
What are the 4 mediational processes
A
- Attention: extent to which behaviour is noticed
- Retention: how well remembered
- Motor reproduction: ability to preform behaviour
- Motivation: will to preform behaviour
5
Q
How does STL learning differ to behaviorist approach
A
Learning and performance need not occur together. Observer behaviours can be stored and preformed at different times
6
Q
Identification
A
- People imitate those who they identify with (role models)
- Person becomes role model if they posses similar characteristics and/or are of high status
- Can be seen in media
7
Q
3 A03 points
A
- Importance of cognitive factors
- Bobo doll
- Underestimate biological factors
- Explains cultural differences
8
Q
Importance of cognitive factors
A
- Classical/operant can not explain learning on their own
- We store info we see others doing to make judgments
- STL provides a more comprehensive explanation by recognising meditational processes that
9
Q
Bobo doll procedure
A
- Children behaved more aggressively towards doll if saw adult do that
- Also showed video, with adult either praised or punished. One saw no consequence
- Aggression: first, third, second
10
Q
Biological factors
A
- Makes no reference to innate biological factors
- Girls less aggressive than Boys in bobo study
- explained by hormonal factors
11
Q
A03 from across the spec
A
Gender development
12
Q
Type of determinism
A
Reciprocal determinism - Influenced by environment but we also exert influence apon it through behaviours we chose to preform - Some extent of free will
13
Q
Explains cultural differences
A
- Can explain cultural differences in behaviour
2. Biological approach cannot
