Social Learning Theory Flashcards
Assumptions
Behaviour is learnt from experience
People learn from OBSERVATION and IMITATION
Learning occurs directly
What is vicarious reinforcement
Leaning takes place from observing others, will only imitate if they see that the behaviour has been rewarded
—only repeats due to seeing consequences of behaviour
Four mediational process
Attention - notice behaviour
Retention - remember
Motor Reproduction- replicates
Motivation- expect to receive same consequence
Identification with role models
More likely to imitate behaviour of whom we identify with
- similar characteristics
- high status
- attractive
Evaluation importance of cognitive factors
SLT provides comprehensive explanation of human learning by recognising importance of mediational processes
Evaluation over reliance on evidence from lab studies
Observations in lab studies
- may have occurrence of demand characteristics
- contrived nature
- bobo doll- meant to hit it so research may tell us little about learning
Evaluation - underestimates biological factors
Bobo dill
-boys were more aggressive
But this may have been due to higher hormone testosterone in boys not girls
-doesn’t account for this
Evaluation- explains cultural differences in behaviour
Explains how children learn from role models around them, including media
-explains how cultural norms are transmitted in particular society
