Behaviourst Flashcards
What does the behaviourist approach concern
Only interested in studying behaviour that can be observed and measured- not concerned with mental processes of the mind
What is classical conditioning
Learning by association occurs when two stimuli are repeatedly pared together - unconditioned becomes conditioned
What is operant conditioning
Shaped and maintained by its consequences, includes positive and negative reinforcement
Explain pavlovs dog
Conditioned dogs to salivate to the sound of a bell
-learnt to associate bell with food, led to salivation
Skinners box explain
Every time rat activated the lever it was given food pellet (positive reinforcement) animal would thus continue to do behaviour due to positive reinforcement
What does positive and neg reinforcement do
Increase the likelihood that behaviour will be repeated
-punishment decreases the likelihood that behaviour will be repeated
Evaluation scientific credibility
Highly controlled lab settings
Objective due to high scientific processes
Greater credibility
Evaluation real life application
Token economy system
- operant conditioning
- schools
- maintain and create behaviour
Classical conditioning in treatment of phobias
Evaluation mechanistic view of behaviour
View animals (including humans) as passive machine like responses to the environment -with little or no insight into their behaviour
Evaluation ethical issues with animal issues
Skinners box.. they were punished if didn’t press lever
- didn’t give consent
- caused distress
- no protection from harm
