What is social learning theory?
Learning via observation and imitation
What is modelling?
Learning a particular behaviour by observing another individual performing that behaviour
What are the 2 types of model?
Live and symbolic
Who are live models?
Someone like a parent or a teacher
Who are symbolic models?
Someone like a TV character
What is imitation?
The act of using someone or something as a model and copying their behaviour
What is identification?
A form of influence where an individual adopts a behaviour because they want to be associated with a particular person or group
What is required for identification?
A degree of similarity between the imitator and the model
Who are children more likely to identify with?
People of the same gender
What is vicarious reinforcement?
Learning as result of observing someone else be reinforced for a behaviour
What are mediational processes?
The internal mental processes that exist between environmental stimuli and the response made by an individual
What are the 4 mediational processes?
Attention, retention, reproduction and motivation
Who conducted a fundamental SLT study?
Bandura
What were the 2 experimental groups in Bandura’s study?
Children who observed aggressive role models, and children who observed non-aggressive role models
What behaviours did Bandura’s aggressive role model carry out?
Striking Bobo with a mallet whilst be verbally aggressive (e.g. Pow)
